This morning I have been reading various social media trying to take in everything that is happening across the country. It is hard to fathom the amount of violence that has happened in the last several days Several have noted that the president has not made a major speech on this issue and have questioned whether he is taking sufficient action. Some supporters of the president have responded that there is nothing he CAN do because all the responsibilities fall on the states and mayors. I agree that there are limits to the President’s legal authorities, however, leaders can exercise ....

So now we are arguing about face masks. I suppose a certain amount of arguing is to be expected. Face masks are inconvenient and can be uncomfortable. It's natural to not want to wear them. Most health experts and government leaders are advocating for wearing face masks, at least for higher risk environments, such as crowded stores. But not everyone seems to understand exactly what the benefit of wearing a mask is. WHY WEAR A MASK? First and foremost, wearing a cloth mask helps protect others. A cloth mask will catch most of the small droplets that exit with your ....

So Jeb Bush is “finally in” the presidential race. His initial strategy to lock up donors and thus scare off potential rivals has been a failure in this unconventional year. In a conventional year, a former governor of the critical swing state of Florida with big donor support would be the automatic frontrunner. But this year is far from normal. This year there is a full slate of very qualified GOP candidates vying for the chance to run against a very flawed Democrat candidate.  Bush also faces the challenge of his family name and a few unpopular position statements on ....

1. Meet fellow local conservatives The local Republican party is where you are likely to find your community’s most active conservatives. Go meet them and feel validated! 2. To receive notice on local political events Do you like to be “in the know?” Your local Republican Party usually serves as a clearinghouse on local events, including events with short notice such as quick visits by your congressman. Joining the party will put you on the receiving end of event notifications. 3. Volunteer for local events Much of politics happens at small local events. By volunteering to support local rallies, dinners, ....

In response to the shooting of Michael Brown by Ferguson police office Darren Wilson, protesters have insisted that the shooting is proof of long-term problems between the local black community and the Ferguson police force. After the initial shooting, there was much discussion as to whether the police were over-militarized. Now that the grand jury has decided to file no charges against Officer Wilson, protesters around the country have taken up the charge that the police are biased against blacks in Ferguson and around the country. Even the President of the United States has weighed in, hinting that the justice ....

Last week I had the privilege of directing the song service at the funeral of my friend Miss Vera, who passed away at the age of 84 years old.  Vera had asked me over 10 years ago, in a very serious tone, if I would lead the singing at her funeral.  I told her that I wasn’t sure I could, since she was so ornery she would probably outlive me. Vera was a member of our church and I have known her for about 24 years. She was widowed in her late 50 with no children and lived alone ever ....

A few days ago I  got into  a discussion on twitter with a feminist. She was tweeting that Republicans want to take away women’s birth control. A few exchanges revealed that this feminist was equating abortion with birth control. The conversation then devolved into arguments about whether the birth control pill can cause abortions and other such details. My primary objection was her use of the phrase “War on Women.”  The phrase “War on Women” and associated arguments are intended to demonize Republicans and conservatives in the eyes of women.  Twitter is full of statements that no female who believes in her ....

This morning I fired up the weather app on my laptop and saw that at that moment it was -0.0 Fahrenheit in my town in Tennessee. Not just zero but NEGATIVE zero. The current (really) cold snap has provoked a lot of jokes about global warming on social media. I’ve noticed that global warming advocates don’t have a sense of humor about it at all. Reading their helpful comments, I have discovered that the problem is apparently I am an ignoramus who doesn’t believe in science. As a matter of fact apparently I am ANTI-science. ....
